Collector Cell Washing

We recommend soaking the collector cells. Soaking cleans better than the dishwasher and cleans better than a pressure washer. The cells typically do not need to be cleaned as often as the prefilters.

After cleaning, inspect the cell plates for dirt, hold the cell up to light. View the plates through the ionizing section to see the dirtiest side. Note that only every other plate captures dirt.

The plates are either charged or grounded. The charged particles are attracted to the grounded plates and repelled by the charged plates. Closely check the grounded plates, where as the charged plates will clean easily.

Fixing Cell Arcing

If a cell is sparking, determine the sparking area and removed cell to inspect closer. To see the sparking, you may need to look in through the blower compartment. See photo below.

To best see a sparking problem, cut an inspection hole in the duct. An inspection window can also be used to see when to clean.

A cell that is sparking randomly throughout is uncommon but could be caused by a film left behind from washing. If tobacco is not cleaned from a cell it can build up and cause random sparking. Diesel fumes can cause shorting problems and are not easily cleaned. High altitude can make the air cleaner more susceptible to sparking. The collector plates should be cleaned to the bare shiny metal (stained is okay).

We have seen continuous sparking (month+) burn away the high voltage contacts between the cells or at the power box. Most often sparking burnt a hole in the rear cell contact. When one cell sparks it draws a surge of current from the other cell. The surge causes a spark at the contacts between the cells. A cell with a burnt contact may also have a sparking problem elsewhere. A cell plate that that has experienced excessive sparking can become loose. The plates are mounted on rods and the surges cause sparking to erode the plate around the rod. Check for loose plates.

If a cell is shorted and keeps the LED indicator from coming on, then inspect for damage. A dent across several plates causing them to touch would be a simple short to find. A dandling ionizing wire can cause a short.

Here our photo shows the view of the cells through the blower compartment. If necessary use a mirror to locate the continuous sparking.

White-Rodgers Electro-Air Cross Reference

White-Rodgers equipment is identified by a model number. Replacement parts can be ordered based on the model number. Current model numbers are in the format SST1400-151, previous SST model numbers were 14c26s-010. See the Model Number Cross Ref for more examples. With the previous model numbers only the digits before the dash (14c26s) are needed for part lookup.

White-Rodgers parts are identified by a part number or manufacturing code. Often the manufacturing code changes but the part number remains the same. Such would be the case if White-Rodgers made improvements to the part, but the part remained fully interchangeable with the previous version.

White-Rodgers part numbers start with the letter F, such as F811-0398. The manufacturing code starts EAC A, example EAC A811-0395. Sometimes the EAC is omitted and the code starts with just the A. The manufacturing code is often stamped in black ink. If using a manufacturing code. lookup the part number in the A to F Cross Ref, then search our site for the part number.

The White-Rodgers warranty for all electronic air cleaner replacement parts is one year. Our customers simply ship us the defective part. We test and confirm the part is defective. We then ship back a brand new part at no charge.
